Daily Deviation, 2006-08-23

Daily DeviationYou know, it aggravates me to NO END to keep finding these artists that are NOT ONLY so much better than ME but are so MUCH better at SO MUCH MORE than ME!!! In all honesty this isn't the best piece in Raats gallery. I've just got this jones for Ewan Mcgregor since Trainspotting,...not to mention the cold hard fact that I'm the gallery director and I can do what I want. Well,...unless moonbeam13 tells me otherwise. Heh. Obi Wan Kenobi by ~Raats (Featured by `dholms)

Wow thats looks awesome, have you tried digital art or do you prefer to stick to traditional?

Thanks for your kind comments. Actually I work in the digital field every day in my "real job". I have been involved in CG Animation since the mid 1980's and released my first CG short film in 1986. Design-wise, I also do a huge amount of digital art. I have got a few pieces in my gallery - "Just another Band" and "Age of Innocence" - which are entirely CG and another called "Off the Edge", which is a combination of CG and traditional (These are all cover art for musicians and bands). I have worked in CG for many years now, and the reason I am doing traditional work again, is because I am tired of Plug-ins and operating systems and this is a great way to remove myself from the computer if I can - especially after a full day at the office. The work here is really just a hobby and it is great to be in such talented company such as yourself and a quite a few others in DeviousArt.
Ah ok that makes sence :)

This is just incredible! The detail on the face and the lightsaber is amazing. I love the lines, the colors and the "text" on the side. It's great... your work is wonderful!
Normally I work quite small, about A3 or about 20 in high. The Obi piece is bigger, about 4 ft tall but I seldom paint because I don't really have time to do this outside of my 'real job'. Just a hobby really. Peace. M
no kidding, a pencil sketch usually takes up a whole day for me
how long would it take you to do something like this usually?
and how did you get your pencils to draw on top of your acrylic!
i can't say ive tried though, because all my acrylics have been on canvas! :)
I don't work all the time because of time limitations. The Obi Wan piece took about a week working for around 2-3 hours at a time. The trick using pencil on top of acrylic is to keep the paint quite thin leaving the underlying texture of the canvas or board to bite into the pencil as you draw. If you work with thick paint then it leaves a plastic skin that is quite difficult to draw over. You use thin paint where you are going to draw and thick paint for more brilliant color and no paint. Takes a bit of time but I believe that with art, less is more so don't overwork the piece. Use a limited amout of line and detail, that can tell a big story and not overwork the illustration. Best to you.. M
